Belarus Inside Out in Berlin

Am Samstag, dem 06. Februar 2010, laden das Kulturmagazin PLOTKI, die belarusische Internetcommunity Generation.BY und die Blogger von iBelarus.net Euch ganz herzlich zur Veranstaltung „Belarus Inside Out – Belarus znutry i zvonku“ ein, dem langen Abend über Belarus, mal (fast) ganz ohne Lukaschenko. Es gibt eine Lesung von Belarus-Reportagen aus dem Jahr 2009, eine Diskussion mit den Autoren, eine Fotoausstellung, ein Büffet mit belarusischen Spezialitäten, ein Screening des Films „Good Bye, Batska!“ und danach wird getanzt!

Lesung und Diskussion mit den Autoren finden in englischer Sprache statt.

Hintergrund: 

Die „letzte Diktatur Europas“ und „Vorposten der Tyrannei“ – so nannte dereinst Condoleezza Rice das Land. Diese und ähnliche Vorstellungen von Repression und Unterdrückung bestimmen weithin unser Belarus-Bild. Ja, von Lukaschenko hat jeder schon mal gehört. Und natürlich von Tschernobyl. Doch was wissen wir sonst?

Im August 2009 durchreisen 20 junge Journalisten, Fotografen, Comiczeichner und Schriftsteller das Land: von Brest nach Mogilev, von Minsk nach Pinsk. Die Hälfte von ihnen stammt aus Belarus, die andere aus allen Winkeln EU-Europas. Gemeinsam richten sie Ihren Blick auf Lebenswirklichkeiten und Alltagswelten in den Städten und auf dem Land, versuchen die Vielschichtigkeit und Komplexität zu erfassen. 

Ist es eine gute Idee, Minsk in ein Museum für Sowjet-Architektur zu verwandeln? Was ist übrig von den endlosen Sümpfen, die einst ein Drittel des Landes bedeckten? Was sind die Kosten der „kostenlosen“ Hochschulbildung? Stirbt das belarusische Dorf oder gibt es Chancen für eine Wiedergeburt, dank der jungen Familien, die in neugegründete Ökodörfer ziehen? Warum singen belarusische Rockgruppen auf Belarusisch? Wie leben Rentnerinnen? Antworten auf diese und andere Fragen versucht Belarus Inside Out zu geben.

On Saturday, February 6th 2010, the cultural magazine PLOTKI, the Belarusian creative community Generation.BY and the civic journalism platform iBelarus.net cordially invite you to the presentation of the new PLOTKI magazine Belarus Inside Out. There will be a reading of reportages from our Belarus trip in 2009, followed by a debate with the authors, a photo exhibition opening, a screening of the film “Good Bye, Batska!, a small Belarusian buffet and a music party!

Background: 

The «last remaining true dictatorship in the heart of Europe» and an «outpost of tyranny» – that is how former U.S. Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice once described the land. These and similar images of repression are influencing our image of Belarus. Certainly everyone has already heard of Lukashenka. And of Chernobyl. But what else do we know?

In August 2009, 20 young journalists, photographers, artists and writers crisscrossed Belarus: from Brest to Mogilev, from Minsk to Pinsk. Half of them came from Belarus, the other half from all corners of the European Union. Together they researched the everyday life in cities and villages, trying to grasp the complexity of the land.

Would it be a good idea to turn Minsk into museum of Soviet architecture? What is left of the huge swamp system that once covered a third of Belarus’ territory? What is the price of a free university education? Is the Belarusian village dying or being revived by young families moving to newly founded eco villages? Why do Belarusian rock bands sing in Belarusian? What situation are female pensioners facing in Belarus today? These and the other questions are in the focus of Belarus Inside Out.
