Blogospheres in Russia and Belarus I: An overview over recent developments
Especially against the background of their ailing classical media landscapes the vibrancy and growth of Russian and Belarusian
blogospheres stands out. Blogs provide alternative spaces, free of the political and economic restrictions that apply to the classical
media spheres of the two countries. The reactions of both countries, as much as they may differ, demonstrate the importance politicians ascribe to the blogosphere: The new Belarusian law on internet-censorship shows insecurity and fear. In Russia, in contrast, some politicians (the most prominent of them being President Medvedev) try to ride the wave by using the social web themselves.
This first panel gives an overview over features, popular sites, recipients and legal developments in the Belorussian and Russian
blogospheres. The panel includes multimedia presentations and will be held in English with translation from Russian (translator: Ingrid Müller, Berlin).
-Aleksandr Plushev, Russian radio and TV journalist and blogger, Moscow
-Wiktar Malischewski, Belorusian blogger and journalist, Minsk
-Moderator: Andreas Bock (n-ost)

Blogospheres in Russia and Belarus II:
Pluralistic Playground or Launch Pad for Democratic Change? Are blogs in Russia and Belorus boosting democracy by bypassing censorship? Does the Russian blogosphere today make up for what the traditional media in the nineties failed to provide: an open, pluralistic and politically free debate? Or are the debates in this limited context something that will remain without any effect on the larger public?
The second panel on the Russian and Belorussian blogosphere concentrates on the political and public impact of blogs and their
role in the democratic development in the two countries. The panel will be held in English and partly be translated from Russian into
English (Translator: Ingrid Müller, Berlin).
-Aleksandr Plushev, Russian radio and TV journalist and blogger, Moscow
-Wiktar Malishewski, Belorusian blogger and journalist, Minsk
-Rustem Adagamow, Russian blogger and photo journalist, Moscow
-Gabriel González Zorrilla, project manager Deutsche Welle blog award, Bonn
-Moderator: Christian Mihr (n-ost)
