A theoretical and practical colloquium focused on preservation and development of languages in Europe, as well as on programs aimed at boosting multilingualism, will be held in Minsk on September, 25th.
EU Delegation to Belarus and Goethe Institut in Minsk will organize a colloquium on European language policy, to be held on the occasion of this year’s European Day of Languages celebrated annually on September 26th. The European Day of Languages is set to support linguistic diversity, multilingualism skills of every European citizen, and development of language teaching around the world.
The program of the colloquium, including two headline lectures, gives an opportunity to consider the European language policy both from the perspective of goals, provisions and declarations of the official Brussels, as well as through the lenses of its practical implementation in the EU member states.
The first set of issues will be addressed in a lecture “EU language policy: goals and reality” prepared by Ulrich Ammon, professor at the Duisburg-Essen university (Germany), a prominent researcher in sociolinguistics, variative linguistics and dialectology.
A lecture of Alexandr Burka, political and cultural scientist, commercial director of the Institute for International Education CIVIC, entitled “European Language Policy: developments and implementation in a number of the European countries”, will focus on mechanisms and models of implementation of EU language policy provisions.
A press conference on the occasion of the European Day of Languages will be held on September 21st, at 15.00, at the Goethe Institut in Minsk (25/3, vul. Very Khoruzhey, assembly hall, 4th flour). The press-conference will be attended by the EU Chargé d’Affairs in the Republic of Belarus Jean-Eric Holzapfel, director of the Goethe Institut in Minsk Katrin Ostwald-Richter, commercial director of the Institute for International Education CIVIC Alexandr Burka, the head of the German language department and education programmes of the Goethe Institut in Minsk Dmitriy Klechko.
