ESU condemns arrests of Belarusian students

Eighteen Belarusian students have been jailed following violently repressed protests against the 19 December Presidential elections. The arrests even continued over Christmas. The European Students’ Union (ESU) strongly condemns these recent developments in Belarus and has –together with its 45 member unions- sent out urgent letters for aid to international and EU policy makers. The arrested students, who are being detained for at least two weeks, are facing expulsion from their universities: “After the 2006 elections, more than 300 students were expelled from their universities for having participated in the protests. We fear that this repressive measure will be repeated over the next weeks.” declared the chairperson of ESU, Bert Vandenkendelaere.
