A Belarusian opposition activist has been sentenced to 15 days in jail for using a placard to mock a plainclothes security officer.

MINSK-- Authorities in the Belarusian capital Minsk have prevented gay activists from holding protests to mark the International Day Against Homophobia on May 17.

The administration of Homel-based “Tourist” hotel has refused to provide premises for the screening of a documentary “Stalin’s Line. Homel Region” produced by local pro-democratic activists.

Belarus and Kazakhstan intend to vigorously cooperate within the framework of various integration associations and international organizations, including the United Nations Organisation, the Collective Security Treaty Organisation, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe, the Commonwealth of Independent States, and the Single Economic Space.

As Telegraf previously reported, May 11, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belarus held consultations with representatives of the Ministry of Economic Development of Russia on the accession to the World Trade Organization.

Youth activist Ivan Amelchanka was detained yesterday at Minsk Leninski District Police Department and later taken to a detention center in Akrestsin Street.
He is expected to stand administrative trial tomorrow morning.

The European Commission has issued a progress report on European Neighborhood Policy and its implementation, noting particular challenges and concerns among the bloc's most immediate neighbors.
