First visit to Belarus by European Commissioner for Neighbourhood

The European Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy Štefan Füle will visit Minsk on 8-9 July 2010. The Commissioner will meet President Alyaksander Lukashenka, other Belarusian leaders, representatives of the opposition and civil society, and will speak to the media.

"We share with Belarus much more than just a common border", stated Commissioner Füle prior to the visit. "Our cultural and economic ties go back many centuries.  We have an opportunity to see these ties go forward, and extended; if this opportunity is seized by Belarusian authorities for the benefit of its citizens."

Note for journalists: The joint press conference of Commissioner Štefan Füle and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergei Martynaw is planned in the afternoon of 9 July in the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Accreditation is with the press service of the ministry.
