Belarusian authorities continue to restrict civil society activism and the media through the criminal justice system and burdensome administrative requirements. Authorities have made some positive steps, including restarting state distribution of three independent publications, registering one radio station and one nongovernmental organization, and releasing all political prisoners in 2008. However, despite the appearance of liberalization, 2009 saw progress reversed; authorities placed four more political prisoners behind bars, violently dispersed several demonstrations, and refused to register at least two NGOs and three newspapers for unfounded reasons.» weiter lesen...

Reporter ohne Grenzen (ROG) ist besorgt über Pläne der weißrussischen Regierung, Internet-Kontrollen zu verschärfen. Präsident Alexander Lukaschenko bestätigte am 30. Dezember, dass seine Regierung letzte Details eines entsprechenden Gesetzentwurfs ausarbeitet. Eine erste Version wurde den Medien am 14. Dezember zugespielt. Die Beratungen über den Entwurf finden bisher nur im Verborgenen statt.

The economic crisis, which according to the president "has only hardened us", became number one problem for the majority of the Belarusians. Thus, 81.3% of respondents consider that Belarusian economy finds itself in crisis, for 52.4% the year of 2009 turned out to be more difficult than 2008 (it "was easier" only for 7.6%), at that for 41.8% the crisis "seriously affected the family's every-day life" ("not affected at all" for only 10.8%).» weiter lesen...
